Galaxies with kinematically distinct cores in Illustris

چکیده

The growing amount of integral-field spectroscopic data creates an increased demand for understanding kinematic peculiarities that carry valuable information about the evolution host galaxies. For kinematically distinct cores (KDCs), a number formation mechanisms have been proposed, but it is still unclear which them commonly occur in Universe. We aim to address KDC cosmological context. used publicly available large-scale hydrodynamic simulation Illustris. identify 134 KDCs, study their properties, and follow back time. Examples four galaxies hosting KDCs are presented described detail. masses hosts general distribution Illustris galaxies, with possible slight preference towards massive can be long-lived features, epochs roughly uniformly distributed look-back times 0-11.4 Gyr, they survive even major or multiple subsequent mergers. Ellipticals with Kinematically–Distinct Cores: WFPC2 Imaging of Globular Clusters

New globular clusters may form in the merger of two galaxies. Perhaps the best examples of merger remnants are the set of ellipticals with kinematically–distinct cores. Here we present HST WFPC2 imaging of 14 kinematically–distinct core ellipticals to examine their globular cluster systems. In particular, we probe the galaxy central regions, for which we might expect to see the strongest signat...

Kinematically Lopsided Spiral Galaxies

Asymmetries in the distribution of light and neutral hydrogen are often observed in spiral galaxies. Here, attention is drawn to the presence of large-scale asymmetries in their kinematics. Two examples of kinematically lopsided galaxies are presented and discussed. The shape of the rotation curve –rising more steeply on one side of the galaxy than on the other– is the signature of the kinemati...

The kinematically peculiar cores of the Coma cluster early – type galaxies NGC 4816 and IC 4051

The Coma cluster is one of the richest known cluster of galaxies, spanning about 4 dex in density. Hence it is the ideal place to study the structure of galaxies as a function of environmental density in order to constrain the theories of galaxy formation and evolution. For a magnitude limited sample of 35 E and S0 galaxies we obtained long slit spectra to derive the rotation curves, the veloci...

On the Kinematics, Stability and Lifetime of Kinematically Distinct Cores: A Case Study

We present a case study of a early-type galaxy (ETG) hosting a kinematically distinct core (KDC) formed in a binary high resolution 1:1 spiral galaxy merger simulation. The runtime of the simulation is pushed up to 10 Gyr to follow the complete evolution of various physical properties. To investigate the origin of the KDC, the stellar component residing within the KDC is dissected, revealing th...

Radio Galaxies in Cooling Cores

A currently active radio galaxy sits at the center of almost every strong cooling core. What effect does it have on the cooling core? Could its effect be strong enough to offset the radiative cooling which should be occuring in these cores? In order to answer these questions we need to know how much energy the radio jet carries to the cooling core; but we have no way to measure the jet power di...
